How to Iron Perler Beads: No Warping, No Falling Apart

The standard six-step fuse bead ironing process: tools and temperature, layout checks, single vs double sided fusing, weighted cooldown, and fixes for curl, dents, and weak edges.

Ironing is the last mile — and where most pieces die: curling, dents, falling apart. Two principles carry you through: heat less rather than more, and always cool under a weight. Here is the full process.

  1. Gather tools

    Medium-heat iron with steam OFF (wool/cotton setting), parchment ironing paper, a firm board, plus a book for weighting the cooldown.

  2. Inspect the bead layout

    Every bead upright, facing up, holes aligned. Fix tilted or stacked beads now — after fusing it is too late.

  3. First pass under paper

    Cover the piece with ironing paper, move the iron in slow circles for 10–20 seconds. Fuse just enough — do not press hard in one spot.

  4. Cool and release

    Let it rest a minute, then peel the paper and lift the piece off the board while still warm, not hot.

  5. Flip and re-fuse (optional)

    Keychains need both sides fused: flip under fresh paper for ~10 seconds. Decor pieces can stay single-sided to keep the bead holes.

  6. Weight the cooldown

    Place a book or board on top for 2–3 minutes. Half of your flatness comes from this step, not the iron.

Single-sided or double-sided?

Decide by use, not by habit:

Troubleshooting the three failures

  • Curling: hot spots shrinking, or unsupported cooling — move in even circles, weight the cooldown
  • Center dents with closed holes: too hot or pressed too long — lower heat, shorter dwell
  • Crumbling edges: under-fused — re-fuse 5–10 seconds; “less is more” ends here

The doneness benchmark: bead holes slightly rounded at the rim but still visible. Holes fully closed means over-fused — the piece turns brittle and loses its light-catching texture.

Zoning for large builds

Never iron a multi-board piece end to end: fuse zone by zone, join sections while the seams are still warm, then touch the seams for 3–5 seconds to blend. The 58×58 template size recommended in the photo conversion guide maps neatly onto standard board zones.
